5 Ways to Get Your Creative Décor Juices Flowing

Colours! Colours everywhere!

There are an infinite number of physically different wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum. And there are an infinite number of different ways to mix these spectral colours. With so many options, where do you start finding the colours you love? And just because you love a hue, does that mean it’s right for your walls?

While humans can only see an estimated 10 million colours, it doesn’t make it any easier choosing the right ones for your home. But we’ve gathered 5 tips to help you get your creative juices flowing and zero in on the colour palettes that speak to you.

  1. Inspiration-to-go
  2. Whether you snap pictures of colours on walks and in nature, or you really like the colour of a branded building or sign; there’s colour wherever you go. Shops are often great places for finding colour schemes, since great care was taken to design them in an appealing way. Shop displays are also good places to fish for colour inspiration.

Don’t forget to consider the architecture of your home. What colours are typically used in your neighbourhood? Noticing doesn’t mean you have to follow suit, but it can help guide you in your process.Use your phone to instantly capture the colours that speak to you. It doesn’t matter what the quality of the picture is – the point is more in noticing the colour.

  3. The Colour Web
  4. The Internet holds an impressive amount of colour palettes curated by creatives all around the world. From muted and clean to neon tones and sharp contrast, every website has a different colour scheme created to entice the viewer. Try searching different hues of your favourite colour on Pinterest and Google Images – you’re bound to find an array of complementary and contrasting colours that suits your favourite perfectly.

  5. Steal Like an Artist
  6. “Colour in a picture is like enthusiasm in life,” explained Vincent Van Gogh. So, if you’re getting stuck on the digital side, and you have art in your room already, use it to help you pick a colour for your home. Not only are you already attracted to this colour, but it will also create a more cohesive and considered colour scheme.

Don’t forget to notice the subtle hues too. Not everyone is drawn to bold, clear colours; that is only one small slice of the spectrum. Perhaps you are drawn to the rich browns of worn leather and old wood. If you love blue, is it midnight, pale aqua or French blue? Get specific.

  7. Pantone Me This
  8. With new updates every 12 – 18 months, and an average of over 100 colours added each year, you cannot go wrong with a Pantone sample colour booklet. Designers use it and décor specialists swear by it. It has every hue and shade under the sun and is the perfect way to get the colour you really want. The colour samples are available online, or order your Pantone products on www.kear.co.za. If you’re really stuck in a rut, just visit your nearest paint store – they should have the most updated Pantone palette available.

  9. A Colour a Day
  10. This practice is a workout for your creativity and visual sense. Look for shades of one colour to photograph and collect each day until you have covered them all. Keep your eyes peeled for pretty veggies in the produce bins, graffiti on a brick wall, a row of colourful binders in your office — nowhere is off-limits.

Then experiment with inspiration boards. A board that works for another person may not work for you – so try out different methods until you hit on something that feels fun. Some may love the physical act of cutting and tacking up tear sheets to a board; others may find that fussy. Collect items in a tray or basket, create an idea book, slide your finds into a binder or stuff everything into a big folder.

The whole point is to collect as many inspirational objects that you can in as many colours possible – one of them is bound to catch your fancy.
