5 Ways to Choose the Perfect Artwork for Your Home
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And there is nothing more beautiful than to behold a beautiful piece of art in your home. Art helps to create a home’s soul, and puts your personality into the house. And let’s face it, bare walls can be quite boring!
However, choosing the right piece of art to complement your space can be one of the most challenging things in decorating. So, we’re giving you five basic tips on how to choose art that brings your home to life:
Choose What You Love
By definition art is a visual expression of one’s imagination. And what could be worse than looking at something that doesn’t express who you are? Art should never be a “maybe”, but should thrill you every day. But don’t rush into it either. Ask yourself what appeals about the piece – is it the colour, subject or something else? Don’t just go on your gut instinct as an instant impulse buy can be a mistake. View it again in an hour’s time or the next day. Then, if you still love it, get it – whether it’s original or mass-produced, expensive or cheap.
While love at first, or second sight can never be discounted, try shopping around before you commit to buying. Start by looking in some art magazines for inspiration. Visit a few galleries for local pieces or try an art fair for some really unique artwork. You can also get some great, original pieces online at unsungart.co.za, artitis.co.za or stateoftheart-gallery.com – only a few of many sites available.
Also remember that art doesn’t start and end with oil paintings: Be open to various mediums. Artists make beautiful works using wax, enamel, gold dust and even recycled materials and fabric.
Let’s Get Practical
While an emotional connection is probably the most important part, you still have to consider the amount of space you have available in your home before buying artwork. When it comes to choosing art, bigger is usually better as lots of smaller pieces can make a small room feel cluttered.
As a general rule, the art above your sofa should be approximately two thirds the width of it or larger. Same goes for space above a bed. However, this rule can be broken: In a gallery wall, several small pieces can work together in one display. In this case, think of the overall display as one unit and try to follow the same guidelines.
If you have a particular painting or print that you adore but the size is too small, consider having it framed with an extra-large matte to increase its visual impact.
Consider the Room
Whichever room you’re buying for, consider the atmosphere you’d like to create – Some artists have a noisy energy to their style and their work often fits well within busy environments such as kitchens and living areas; quieter pieces work better in rooms where you might want to create a calmer setting, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Also consider a contemporary piece for a traditional space and vice versa. It shakes it up and adds visual interest.
The colour of artwork can influence the look of the whole room, so if you’ve already chosen a theme – stick to it. Your most significant piece of artwork should have a background colour that matches your wall colour. You can also play around with different shades of the same colour – like a white and light blue painting on a navy wall. If you’re unsure about the colour, try black and white prints of your favourite artwork – it’ll fit in almost everywhere.
If you have fallen in love with a piece that doesn’t exactly match your existing theme, try adding two or three accent colours from the artwork to your décor. Home accessories are easy to replace and blend in, making your artwork stand out even more.
