Choosing Textiles That Last
The first thing that comes to mind when buying fabric for your new décor is usually what colour to pick. It’s usually the single biggest factor in fabric selection. But while colour is important, there’s one factor that goes beyond even that: durability.
Choosing fabric for your home is a big investment, and not one you want to skimp on – especially when your home is “well-lived”. Here are four tips to choosing the right fabric for your life-challenged interior:
The Rub Count Counts
If you are in the process of selecting fabric for your décor, you may want to consider the fabric’s rub count.
Rub tests are done to help determine how durable fabric is – the higher the rub count, the tighter the weave of the fabric and the longer it is likely to last.
Fabrics with a rub count between 9 000 to 15 000 usually strike a good balance between durability and comfort and is perfect for curtains or décor accessories. However, for family friendly pieces of furniture that can endure TV time, story time and cuddles in the evening, consider fabrics with a rub count of at least 25 000.
Consider the Colour
Dark greens, dusty pinks, medium blues and coral (thanks to Pantone’s Colour of the Year) … Interior décor trends for 2019 are leaning towards a more lifestyle-orientated home. But if you have your heart set on a warm creamy colour for your furniture, it might be time to reconsider.
Luckily dark colours can be considered neutral, too. Think charcoal grey, dark brown, deep gold and black then accessorise with this season’s hottest colour to really bring your space to life.
This season, South African homes are filling up with geometric shapes and bold patterns everywhere and parents couldn’t be happier. Patterns are a fun way to add great excitement to any room, plus they have a great way of hiding wear-and-tear on upholstery, accessories and curtains. If you’re not ready for such a bold move, try using textured fabrics for a subtler look with the same benefits.
Man’s best friend is woman’s worst nightmare when it comes to getting stains on the furniture. And that’s even before the kids have gotten to your newly upholstered cream lounger…
